PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) - NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted formations on the red planet that have a similarity to a certain "Star Trek" symbol.
The crescent shapes were made by lava flowing around -- but not over -- migrating sand dunes, according to the University of Arizona.
The lava cooled and the sand blew away, leaving the chevrons known as "dune casts."
The orbiter took pictures of the formations in southeast Hellas Planitia.
The footprints look not unlike the insignia of Starfleet from "Star Trek."
