SPRINGETTSBURY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WJAC) — Police in eastern Pennsylvania said they received a strange call Thursday: a very large snake in a wooded area along a road.

According to Springettsbury Township police, officers responded to the call and drove out to York County where they discovered a 15-foot dead python.

Police said it was unclear where the snake came from or how long it had been there.

Pythons are native to the tropics and subtropics of the Eastern Hemisphere.

The reptiles are often kept as pets, but it is illegal to release them into the Pennsylvania wilds since they are not a native species.
