Hixson man charged with shooting at bear in Gatlinburg

Police in Gatlinburg are charging a man from Hixson with shooting at a bear that he said was charging him at a local motel.

A Gatlinburg Police report obtained by NewsChannel 9 says 53-year-old Gregory Sapp is charged with illegal discharge of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

The report says Sapp told officers the bear charged him, and he fired six shots at it. He says the bear then ran away, and authorities were unable to locate it.

The report says Gatlinburg Police and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) will continue to investigate the matter.
